Final Project Turned In

Well, I sent in our final project. Since I didn't have time to let you all review the finished product, I hope you are happy with it. I included you on the email so let me know if you don't receive it. I'll send it to you personally if it didn't go through.

I left out some of the information you sent me only because it conflicted with what other group members submitted. I really hope everyone's happy with what I submitted. I was hoping for everyone's feedback before I sent it in but that wasn't in the cards.

I know you had some personal things come up and I completely understand how sometimes personal things need to be your priority. I just wanted to let you know that it would have been really helpful to me if you had just touched base with me to let me know that your part was coming. Late is doable but the difficult part was wondering if it would come at all. I was trying to put alternative measures into place in case we didn't hear from you. You put together some good information at the end so it was worth the wait. Good luck with your job and the rest of your classes!

Phone Assignment

My partner for this assignment was Rebekah. I was the employee and she was the boss.

My biggest argument and most important was that I pointed out that I was the only bilingual person that worked for our program and my site requires a bilingual person because there is so many Spanish speaking parents. I have been called many times by other Site Coordinators when they can not talk to parents. Who would they call if I was not available?

I told her that this was my 3rd year at the same site and already thinking of improvements for the next year.

My site is very unique, aside from keeping up with all the requirements of the program I also have to keep track of all the other things that are after school. For example, Jr. Giants, choir, band, bible study, and all the other things going on after school.

Rebekah agreed that it does make a great difference being bilingual and that it is necessary to have someone who can talk to the Spanish speaking parents and thought I deserved a raise. I think I would really love to have Rebekah be my boss.

I don't want to go to work

I am not at work yet and already irritated with the idea of having to go in to the office and seeing my supervisor. I can not stand her! She is so negative about everything and always find something to complain about. I've thought about telling her how negative she is and letting her know that we need to have more support from her. She has had this position for 7 months and this is my 3rd year doing my job, if there was something that I needed to do differently I'm sure someone else would have brought it up to me already. When her position became available I had the opportunity to apply for it, it would have been better pay and easier than my job but I denied it. I love what I do!

We have 2 supervisors that we're suppose to contact if we need any assistance and she reports to our senior supervisor. My buddy and I run the site and have our rec-leaders that w e supervise. Last week the 2nd supervisor resigned from his position. He was the most supportive and reliable of them both. He was a school counselor before he took this job so he approached any situation that we had differently and made us feel supported. So now we're stuck with her!

Sandra always find something negative to say about anything that we talk to her about. When she does site visits it's just to talk to us about something that we're doing wrong. During her visit she does not have any interaction with our kids and never talks to our staff. My staff hates her too! John would come and talk to the kids, ask how their day was and what they were doing? He always pointed out good things that my staff was doing and encouraged them to keep doing a good job. After doing all those things he would talk to me about what he needed to talk about. Sandra is just in and out of our site. I just don't see how a supervisor is going to be so negative and always focus on the most minimal things in the situation. She always has a suggestion on how we could have done things differently. I'm sure many of you have had horrible supervisors but I can honestly say this is my first.

I started to think about this situation and wondered what I can do about it? So I have came up with a positive way to look at this situation and have her to thank her for it. She reminds me how to be a good supervisor all the time. I remember to praise my staff more often for all the good things that they do and try to be more positive all the time. When I have an issue with one of my staff member I remember to point out all the good things that they are doing and then tell them what they need to improve on. I take away all the negativity by focusing on the good things they do and ask for some extra effort on what they are not doing well.

There's always room for improvement and I'm focusing on what I can do differently to make things better.

Now I'm off to work.

What a nice day it is today

I would just like to mention that it is such a beautiful day outside! I have tried to be outside as much as possible. I even went as far as to take my paperwork with me and sit outside on the benches rather than to be inside. I like it when it's like this in Sacramento because it reminds me of Watsonville. I was born and raised in Watsonville, I lived there all my life till I moved up here for school. Watsonville is the strawberry capital, 10 minutes south of Santa Cruz and 45 minutes north of Monterey, for those of you who have never heard of it. Since it's right on the coast the sun will be nice and warm while the cool breeze keeps me nice and cool. I LOVE IT!!!

Emotional IQ Test

I made a mistake when I posted my score.

I scored a 132.
I guess it's just verification and confirmation of what I already know about myself.
I do feel like I can deal with my own emotions and those of others. For the most part
I can control my moods and feel that as I'm getting older I'm doing a much better job. Working with kids has made a great difference in how I deal with my emotions. Even if at times I feel like I don't know why I'm being so emotional or sensitive about the dumbest things. I have goals and dreams and I am determined to make them happen! I am a social butterfly and find it easy to make friends or acquaintances. AND I always say, "Don't confuse my kindness for a weakness," I'm always willing to help in anyway that I can. I think I have great advice even if at times I may not say what you want to hear it is always better to be honest than lying to you to make you feel better for that specific moment. Reality will eventually set in.

Erin Brokovich

The movie started off great and presented the theme of the entire movie and which was that Erin had to look for a job to support her 3 children. While she was out interviewing and looking for a job she is hit by another person and she ends up with injuries and decides to get a lawyer to help her fight the case. The lawyer told her that he was good and that she would have nothing to worry about but when she looses the case she is frustrated and wants answers from her lawyer. (Coincidentally the day she looses the case her baby sitter tells her that she will no longer be able to take care of her children and since she got so much money from winning the case she has nothing to worry about because she can find a better baby sitter. Little did she know that she lost the case.) She calls, calls and continue to call but never gets a call back from her lawyer. She decides to resolve the problem by going down to his office and pretending to be one of his employees. He sees her in the office and immediately recognizes her. He asks her what she was doing and she tells him that since he was not able to call her back she decided to take matters into her own hands and start working for him cause she needs a job. She basically demands a job and when he denies her she negotiates with him. She asks him to give her a chance and at least if it does not work out he can dismiss her. He agrees.

While she is reviewing some of the cases she finds a case that does not make any sense because there is PG&E and doctor bills included and just does not make sense. She asks him if she can investigate the case and he allows her. Well after not showing up to work for some days she returns to find her stuff in a box because she had been fired. She marches right in to her office and demands an explanation since she was doing was her job and he had allowed her to investigate. It is here that she tells him what he had been doing and tells him that she also thinks that she may have discovered a cover up. When I say she demands I mean she was not nice about it, she yelled and barged right in to the office. This is not her best communications skills yet is is exactly what he needs to hear. Yet he tells her that there are proper ways of investigating a case and the way that she went about it is not allowed so her consequence is that she is fired.

Erin is left EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED without a job,no money or food and is desperate because she has 3 kids to feed. After she has been looking for a job, calling around trying to get interviews she gets a call and it's her former boss asking her random questions about the case she was investigating and she is a smart ass with him telling him that she is aware of all the things he has discovered and that was exactly what she was investigating and that maybe if he would have payed attention she could have told him this herself. He goes to her house and ask her questions about the case and eventually rehires her. She makes an excellent point by asking for a raise, benefits and a cell phone because of all the traveling that she will be doing. He agrees because he knows she has an excellent point.

She continues to investigate using ALL her resources through out her investigation. As it turns out, what once may have been her curse while she was working in the office turns out to be her best asset in the field. She showed up to work in nice clothing but not the most professional because some of her outfits were a bit revealing and sexy. The woman in the office did not like her because of this and were rude to her all the time. However, in the field when she is doing her investigation she was able to talk to allot more people if she convinced some of the men.

All these problems seem realistic from a single mom with 3 kids and struggling to find a decent job, to the catty woman she works with, threats she receives for doing the investigation, to using her charming personality to get something she needs.

I think that if I was in her shoes I would have reacted the same exact way. She reminds me of myself. I think Erin's character handles this perfectly because if she was not as blunt, aggressive and assertive she would have not been as successful.

Erin's conflict management style is a competing shark which is exactly what she needs to be. There were times that she yelled at her boss and said somethings that were not appropriate at all but never got fired.

The movie concluded perfectly and Erin continues to work for the same law firm.
